Positive Parenting Newsfeed—a Child Trends Project—is Supported by the National Science Foundation

Research

The Climate Resilient Parenting campaign of the Positive Parenting Newsfeed explores the intersection between research, the news media, and the public. The project’s research studies aim to build knowledge around informal STEM learning and enhance communication efforts that lead to the adoption of climate-resilient positive parenting practices. This work builds on previous NSF-funded project findings, which demonstrated that parent-informed Local TV news segments (the top news source for the majority of adults in the United States), featuring parenting advice based on child development science leads to increased knowledge, value for science, and adoption of featured behaviors among Latino and other parents.

The formative research study will

  • Develop a science-based Roadmap for climate-resilient parenting with a focus on Latino families.
  • Launch national media and grassroots public engagement campaign based on the Roadmap through partnership with the Televisa Foundation, Ivanhoe Broadcast News, Abriendo Puertas, Hispanic Access Foundation, and Inner Space Center.
  • Develop new knowledge regarding novel informal STEM learning experiences/environments.

This project aims to engage child development scientists, climate scientists, and learning scientists to work with the project’s community partners to co-develop a science-based Roadmap for parenting during the climate crisis, thereby building new knowledge.
