Latino Children Start Kindergarten Behind in Math

An original analysis of data from a large, nationally representative sample of kindergartners shows that Latino kindergartners trail their white peers by the equivalent of 3 months in math skills. According to research from Child Trends’ Hispanic Institute, poverty, lower participation in center-based child care, and fewer books in the home are some reasons young Latino children start school behind in math.
